A Teacher's Tool for School-Aged DHH Students

This game and teaching tool includes approximately 200 cards, with questions like What classroom distractions make it difficult to listen or attend class?" or "Which term best describes you? Deaf or Hard of Hearing?" Teachers can tailor it to specific student levels and needs in the areas of Communication, Accommodations, Social/Emotional Development and Hearing/Amplification Basics. The game creators wanted a teaching tool that would allow students to develop their self-advocacy skills in a fun and memorable way.

Students are challenged to think about how they interact with the world, while promoting discussion and vocabulary development. Once the student answers a question, they choose a tile which lists a situation they could find themselves in and will have to decide whether to keep or give away the tile. The student with the most tiles at the end of the game wins!

The authors are teachers who designed the game and teaching tool to meet a variety of children's and teacher's needs that are not currently being met. The game includes cards, slides and a checklist that aligns with The Expanded Core Curriculum for Students who are DHH. [Leann Lohman, M.A. Joanne Colombo-Hughes, M.A.; 2-4 players, ages 5-21, 15+ minutes play time]
